A Happy Moment

Ellany likes to play in our closet. She puts a blanket on the floor, closes the folding doors and plays in the dark. Yesterday, Ryker wandered in while Ellany was in there playing. I was surprised to hear both of their voices coming from the closet, and stood outside to listen. Ellany had discovered that Ryker would repeat whatever word she said, and was having fun with it!

Brynn was listening with me, and told Ellany to recite "Trashy Town" for Ryker. I know the name sounds bad, but "Trashy Town" is a children's book that we have on DVD. It is about Mr. Gilly, a trash collector who drives his truck around the town and cleans it up. Ryker looooves it and will recite the whole thing, including all the sound effects. Ellany has it memorized too - like pretty much everything that she reads or watches.

So, Ellany and Ryker sat in the closet and took turns reciting the lines from "Trashy Town" together. Ryker also supplied all the trash truck noises. It was so much fun to listen to!! They went through the whole thing four times.

Now, let me tell you why this is so remarkable. This is the first time Ellany and Ryker have played together. EVER! Up to this point, their interaction has consisted of Ellany screaming whenever Ryker comes in her room and throws everything on the floor. Those of you with typical children probably can't imagine that...siblings who don't play together?? But that is reality in our house. So I am very excited that they found a common interest - something they could do together. And I think Ellany realized that Ryker could actually be fun. It was a moment that made me very happy. :0)
