How can a child be so completely charming and so utterly frustrating at the same time?
A few days ago, Ellany had a Faith In God recognition night. This is a church program for girls age 8-11. The recognition night was just a brief 30 minutes. For that entire 30 minutes (plus a few before the program started) I was stressed and on edge. Highly strung and ready to instantly spring into action. Why? Because we were in a social setting that required sitting quietly in a chair. And Ellany is completely unpredictable and often inappropriate. You never know what she may do or say to surprise everyone. She may speak whatever comes to mind in a loud voice so everyone can hear. She may jump up to play the piano or point something out. Anything is possible.
When we entered the room (which was already full of people) Ellany ran to the piano and started playing a lively tune. I quickly walked over and asked her to come sit down. Then she picked up a dead fly, proclaimed "I found a fly!", and held it up for everyone to see. I calmly found a trash can and tried to pretend nothing happened.
When it came time for her to play a Primary song on the piano, she started playing some random notes instead. I had to stop her and redirect to the music in front of her. Later, all the girls were asked to stand in the front of the room and take turns reading from a printed list. While standing there waiting for her turn, Ellany happily picked her nose. I was sitting just a few feet in front of her, desperately whispering her name to get her attention (and make her stop!)...she didn't even look at me.
Then, it was Ellany's turn and she got to read the last item on the list. She started with a dramatic, "AND...", paused for a moment, then read her part perfectly and with enthusiasm. Ending with a flourish, she struck the cutest little pose that made everyone laugh. Absolutely adorable!

The sweetest little contradiction.
The most maddening, lovable paradox.
My enigma wrapped in a mystery.
